5 Heating Myths

1. Space heaters can save you more money than using your gas heater.

Some people like to use space heaters instead of their gas heating system in hopes to save money. Electricity however can actually cost much more than natural gas, so it’s typically more efficient to just use your gas heating system instead of space heaters.

2. Closing off vents will lower your energy bill.

Your heater does not adjust the amount of heat it releases based on how many vents you have open or closed. Your heater actually works harder because closing vents can throw the pressure load off balance.

3. Your fireplace can heat your home.

A fireplace is a great way to heat a room. However it is not an efficient way to heat the rest of your home. When you open the flue in your fireplace, you are opening up a vacuum that air can escape out of. You can find that while your fireplace is heating up the room you are in, the other rooms are colder because the heat is being sent up the flue and out of the chimney.

4. Ceiling fans should only be used in the summer.

Some people believe you can only use your ceiling fans during the warmer months, but they can also be used in the winter to help circulate the warm air in your home. If you can reverse the way the blades spin, it will take the warm air that rises down to circulate the rest of your room.

5. Keeping your home the same temperature is better than adjusting it.

Programmable thermostats are a great investment. It can be programmed to change the temperature in your home while you are away. Some people believe it will save them money not touching the thermostat rather than adjusting it during the day. This is not true however, when your heater clicks less, you will use less energy which means keeping your home cooler for longer periods of time will help save you money.
