How To Keep Your Home Air Clean

November 24, 2015

Follow these tips from the American Lung Association and Good Housekeeping to help keep your home air clean.

  • Get your house tested for radon gas: it’s odorless, silent and the second biggest cause of lung cancer after cigarette smoke.
  • Don’t allow cigarette smoke in your house, take it outside.
  • Install a carbon monoxide detector. Carbon monoxide poisoning takes over 400 lives a year. Install the carbon monoxide detector near the bedrooms.
  • Have a technician come out once a year to check all fuel burning appliances.
  • Don’t run your car or any other fuel burning engines in the garage. This could be your car or a lawn motor, but it can create deathly carbon monoxide poisoning or dangerous levels of air pollution.
  • Use Low VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) products in your home. VOC’s can be in paint, hair, nail and cleaning products. Look for products marked Low VOC’s and be sure to open windows or use exhaust fans while using these products.
  • Clean your air conditioner and dehumidifier and heater .Your systems should be cleaned ever year. Call DelFera Heating and Cooling this fall and spring for your yearly maintenance on your air conditioner and heater. We also clean dehumidifiers as well!
  • Don’t forget to clean up after your pet. If you are sensitive to pet allergies, don’t have pets in bedrooms. Clean two or more times a week floors and upholstered furniture.
  • Make sure you have proper ventilation. Excess moisture can lead to growth of mold which can be harmful people especially those who have allergies.
